LAMBERT, HENDRICKS & ROSS (Dave Lambert, 1917–66, Jon Hendricks, b. 1921, and Annie Ross, b. 1930) The Hottest New Group in Jazz Recorded in New York City, 1959 and 1960, and Chicago, 1961. Long before the vocal gymnastics of the Manhattan Transfer and Bobby McFerrin attracted attention, there was Lambert, Hendricks & Ross: Dave Lambert, Jon Hendricks, and Annie Ross. Granted, their names sound more like a law firm than a vocal group, but decades after their demise, LH&R remain the hippest and most innovative vocal stylists in jazz. Annie Ross wrote clever, comical lyrics that she delivered with tongue-twisting panache. The tracks that comprised the concept album Lambert, Hendricks & Ross Sing Ellington are also included here. Astutely, for this record, the group blended familiar tunes with lesser-known ones.

Lambert, Hendricks & Ross were an American vocalese trio formed by jazz vocalists Dave Lambert, Jon Hendricks and Annie Ross. From 1962 to 1964, Ross was replaced by vocalist Yolande Bavan. The group formed in 1957 and recorded their first album Sing a Song of Basie for ABC-Paramount Records. The album featured versions of Count Basie standards and was successful enough that the Count Basie Orchestra collaborated with them on Sing Along With Basie (1959).
