This performance of Mahler's First Symphony was given by the London Philharmonic Orchestra conducted by Klaus Tennstedt in the Royal Festival Hall on 28 January 1990 and was broadcast live on BBC Radio 3 (according to the Radio Times, Tennstedt only conducted the second half of the concert; the conductor before the interval was George Benjamin). No mention is made of the source material in the booklet of that 1985 performance, and a discreet acknowledgement on the back inlay that the orchestra "wishes to thank Laurie Watt for facilitating this release of this recording" is as far as the LPO's record company is willing to go towards admitting that without the provision of an amateur home tape the.
This Warner Classics reissue of Klaus Tennstedt's EMI recordings of the complete symphonies is a case in point, because the London Philharmonic Orchestra was not in the first rank of Mahler ensembles, and there are several instances of loose playing and occasional signs of fatigue. Yet Tennstedt brought an extraordinary spirit to the symphonies and inspired the LPO to show real passion and power, despite its technical problems, and the performances are frequently compelling, especially the Symphony No. 6 in A minor, "Tragic," and the Symphony No. 9 in D major.

London Philharmonic Orchestra conducted by Vladimir Jurowski. Vladimir Jurowski conducts the London Philharmonic Orchestra in this live 2010 concert performance including the Symphony's original second movement, 'Blumine'. Everything about the dewy dawn of this Mahler One is perfect: the well-articulated and perfectly placed distant trumpet fanfares, spirited false cuckoo-call. he point and spirit of the finale are dazzling, the tempo changes masterly throughout. David Nice, BBC Music Magazine, July 2013.
Klaus Tennstedt, who became the London Philharmonic Orchestra's music director in 1983, recorded the complete Mahler symphonies with the orchestra between 1977 and 1986. A recording of the First Symphony in 1977 left critics underwhelmed, but recordings of the Fifth and Ninth won considerable plaudits.
Symphony No. 1 in D major by Gustav Mahler was mainly composed between late 1887 and March 1888, though it incorporates music Mahler had composed for previous works. It was composed while Mahler was second conductor at the Leipzig Opera, Germany. Although in his letters Mahler almost always referred to the work as a symphony, the first two performances described it as a symphonic poem or tone poem. The work was premièred at the Vigadó Concert Hall, Budapest, in 1889, but was not well received.
