The original liner notes were written by Chet Flippo, a contributor to Rolling Stone, and offer a short introduction and some praise on each artist involved with the project.

In 1976,Jerry Bradley, General Manager of RCA in Nashville, saw the great successes of Nelson’s Red Headed Stranger and Jennings' Dreaming My Dream and decided there must be something to this idea of Outlaw Country, so he put together tracks from Waylon Jennings, Willie Nelson, Jessi Colter and Tompall Glaser as a compila-tion album, and wisely titled it Wanted: The. Outlaws. The name Outlaw came from Hazel Smith, a secretary at Hillbilly Central, Glaser’s recording studio. She’d been referring to the artists who recorded there as outlaws.

With Waylon’s wife Jessi Colter and friend Tompall Glaser filling out the posse, the first-ever platinum country album pulled together some of the best tunes from this dream team’s past as part of a fresh concept. The Waylon/Willie duet A Good Hearted Woman became outlaw country’s unofficial anthem and earned Nashville’s Most Wanted plenty of ears outside the country crowd. Wanted! The term "outlaw" had been bandied about after Waylon Jennings' 1972 hit "Ladies Love Outlaws," but it didn't permanently gel until the release of the album Wanted! The Outlaws in 1976. The songs in this packaged product weren't new - the album contained previously released material by Jennings, Willie Nelson, Tompall Glaser, and Jennings' wife Jessi Colter (who had hit the charts a year earlier with "I'm Not Lisa")

The Outlaws’, an album he recorded with Willie Nelson, Tompall Glaser, and Jessie Colter for RCA Records. The album was the first country music album certified platinum. The album ‘Waylon and Willie’ was released in 1978, and gave the hit single ‘Mammas Don't Let Your Babies Grow Up to Be Cowboys’. Another album ‘I've Always Been Crazy’ also released in the same year. Jennings along with Johnny Cash, Kris Kristofferson and Nelson formed a band called ‘The Highwaymen’ in the mid-1980s. Personal Life & Legacy. Jennings got married to Jessi Colter in 1969 and the couple remained married until his death. The couple had a son, Waylon Albright ‘Shooter’ Jennings. He started consuming amphetamines at the time when he started living with Johnny Cash. He was arrested for conspiracy and possession of cocaine in 1977.
