Original Motion Picture Soundtrack composed and conducted by John Williams.

This puts it right up there with the 1959 Ben Hur, the 1960 The Alamo, the 1956 Around the World in 80 Days, and the 1960 Exodus. Where the movie bogs down is the center section where Roy tries to come to grips with his UFO phobia and fails miserably. Otherwise, Williams is at his best in this score, it compares favorably with the flying sequence in E. another Williams gem. Williams, who deservedly earns all his awards and nominations, may well be the most prolific motion picture composer of our time. The five note theme used as a way to communicate with the aliens is pure genius. The 12-minute sequence at the film's finale, is simply superb.

The soundtrack album was a commercial success, peaking at on the US Billboard album chart in February 1978 and was certified Gold by the RIAA for 500,000 copies shipped Although not included on the original soundtrack album, a 7" single of a disco treatment of the five-note motif, titled, "Theme from Close Encounters of the Third Kind", was included with the album as a free bonus item. Despite being a giveaway, Billboard chart rules at that time allowed the single itself to chart, and it peaked at on the US Billboard.

Star Wars (Original Motion Picture Soundtrack) is the soundtrack album to the 1977 film Star Wars, composed and conducted by John Williams and performed by the London Symphony Orchestra. Williams' score for Star Wars was recorded over eight sessions at Anvil Studios in Denham, England on March 5, 8–12, 15 and 16, 1977. The score was orchestrated by Williams's frequent associate Herbert W. Spencer, who also later orchestrated the scores for The Empire Strikes Back and Return of the Jedi

The Close Encounters score was a masterful mixture of eerie suspense and tremendous emotive bombast, complete with hair-raising moments and the great, big playful musical conversation between the mothership and the humans. Although the soundtrack album was a shoddy affair - poorly mixed and sequenced, and missing most of the conversations - the music portions remain essential.
