The musical style of Al-Azif can best be described as black metal, but that’s almost like saying Cthulhu could best be described as a squid. The album often lacks a certain punchy gravitas, but that being said The Great Old Ones have managed a truly impressive record in Al-Azif. They could have fallen into the pits of masturbatory mathcore, tedious technicality, and gloriously failed avant-garde experimentation, but they have instead created a black metal album that sounds not only unique, but often gripping.
Ultimately, with Al Azif The Great Old Ones have crafted a classic of modern French black metal, all . Lovecraft fondness aside. Anyone who is a fan of recent entries into the Deathspell Omega discography or of any of the aforementioned bands should find something to like here. The bonus is that as with any . Lovecraft story, this album will haunt you long after the encounter is over. Pretty classy, and the main draw behind The Great Old One's newest album, Al Azif. Being French and all, you would hope that The Great Old One's would have some fresh new ideas to bring to a very trendy, very popular genre, other than the whole Lovecraft thing.

Two years after their stellar debut Al Azif, the follow-up Tekeli-Li delves even deeper into Lovecraft’s mythos. My copy of the album came with a sublime copy of the original story, wonderfully illustrated by band-member Jeff Grimal, who also painted the eerie cover art. The Great Old Ones, including the master himself. Serving as a twisted disclaimer, intro track Je Ne Suis Pas Fou loosely translates to I am not insane. The Great Old Ones Tekeli-li cover 2014 lp by Jeff Grimal. Les Acteurs de l'Ombre. The rich canvas of Tekeli-Li evokes a wide scope of atmospheres, from faint traces of hope, sweeping Antarctic beauty, and to the brink of absolute terror.
